The Alaska Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Anchorage Center wrapped up a strong year in 2024 under the leadership of new Center Director Angie Gerken, whose Alaska roots and decades of business experience are helping shape the next chapter of entrepreneurial support in the state.
Angie grew up on the north shore of Lake Iliamna, where she learned the ins and outs of seasonal operations running her family’s sport-fishing fly-out lodge. Later, she went on to own and manage a business in Anchorage for 17 years, gaining firsthand experience with the opportunities and challenges Alaska entrepreneurs face.
With more than 30 years in business, a strong foundation in human resource management, and a talent for leveraging technology, Angie brings both practical know-how and forward-looking strategy to her role.
She’s also never lost touch with her love of Alaska. Whether fishing in Homer, bird watching, or traveling, she stays connected to the same rhythms and industries many of her clients are part of.
Impact That Matters: $18.5 Million in 2024
Under Angie’s guidance, the Anchorage Center helped local businesses secure an incredible $18.5 million in funding in 2024, fueling growth and opportunity across the state. Along with that milestone, the center delivered:
- 644 clients served statewide
- 380 new clients welcomed

- Innovation support: From AI advising sessions to helping businesses pursue federal SBIR/STTR funding, the center is helping Alaskans compete in cutting-edge industries.
Celebrating Alaska’s Entrepreneurs
The Anchorage Center’s strong impact isn’t just measured in numbers, it’s about building a stronger foundation for Alaska’s small businesses, families, and communities. Under Angie Gerken’s leadership, the center has gained new momentum. Her rare combination of deep Alaska roots and broad business expertise has brought both fresh vision and steady guidance to the work of supporting entrepreneurs.
As the Alaska SBDC approaches its 40th anniversary, the Anchorage Center’s success is proof of what happens when local knowledge, hands-on experience, and innovative thinking come together. With nearly $19 million invested in client success in 2024 alone, the future for Alaska’s small businesses is looking bright.
