The Porcupine Theater

A Historic Landmark Revitalized as a Cultural and Economic Hub

Since its founding in 1956, the Homer Theater stood as a cultural landmark in Homer, Alaska, rooted in community and connection. Built by the Kranich family with steel shipped from the Lower 48, the theater opened its doors with a free screening of The Command. Known as the Homer Family Theater, it quickly became a hub for family-friendly entertainment, with movies arriving by steamship from Seward, and a venue for local gatherings that brought residents together.

Over the decades, the theater evolved under the stewardship of various owners, each contributing to its legacy as a cherished space for the Homer community. In 2024, the theater entered an exciting new chapter under the ownership of Brundlefly, LLC. Rebranded as The Porcupine Theater, it is being transformed into a multipurpose performance venue and community center made possible through critical funding from Northrim Bank and the Alaska SSBCI Tribal Consortium Loan Guarantee Program.

Before this historic financing could be secured, the ownership team turned to the Alaska Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in December 2023. Working closely with Homer-based advisor Robert Green, they received extensive support to prepare for acquisition and remodeling. Together, they developed detailed financial projections, analyzed cash flows and debt service coverage ratios, and conducted industry research to evaluate new opportunities. The SBDC also helped the team refine their remodeling plans and explore ways to diversify revenue through live performances, expanded food service, and second-run films.

This hands-on advising gave Brundlefly, LLC the tools and confidence to present a strong case to lenders. That preparation proved pivotal in securing Alaska’s first SSBCI Tribal Loan, a milestone that marked both a new beginning for the business and a historic achievement for the state.

With SBDC guidance and SSBCI-backed financing, the Porcupine Theater is now poised to thrive as a versatile cultural hub. Renovations and programming updates are bringing new energy to Homer, creating jobs, and ensuring the community has a vibrant space for films, performances, and gatherings.

Reflecting on her work with Homer Business Advisor Robert Green, Susannah Webster shared, “Your assistance in creating draft financial projections for the bank was very useful and I’ve referred many former real estate clients your way. The SBDC’s guidance made this project possible.”

The Porcupine Theater’s rebirth shows how Alaska SBDC advising and SSBCI financing can work hand-in-hand to preserve local history, strengthen small businesses, and fuel economic growth. By combining entrepreneurial vision with expert support, Brundlefly, LLC has ensured that Homer’s cherished theater will continue serving the community for generations to come.
