Serving Comfort & Community in Valdez
For Samantha Geffe, owner of Sam’s Spot in Valdez, Alaska, cooking has always been more than a passion — it’s a way to bring people together. After experiencing a major life event, she decided it was time to follow her dream of creating a place where people could enjoy homemade comfort food that truly feels like home.
Samantha began small, cooking for community events and supplying meals to local coffee shops. As demand grew, so did her vision. Her dedication to fresh, locally sourced ingredients and scratch-made meals led to the opening of Sam’s Spot, a full-service restaurant that quickly became a local favorite, known for its warmth, quality, and community roots.
Building a sustainable, year-round restaurant in a remote Alaskan town like Valdez came with its challenges. From securing funding and navigating seasonal customer flows to managing daily operations, Samantha knew she needed more than just a great menu — she needed a clear plan and strong financial foundation to grow successfully.
That’s when she connected with Ruth Wolfe at the Alaska Small Business Development Center (SBDC). Through one-on-one advising, Ruth helped Samantha with her business plan, build out financial projections, and secure a grant through a business plan competition. This helped her transition from operating a few days a week to her current location inside the Eagles Hall in Valdez.
Today, Sam’s Spot is open year-round, offering locals and seasonal visitors breakfast favorites like biscuits and gravy, chicken-fried steak, and breakfast burritos. The restaurant’s reputation continues to grow, thanks to its focus on high-quality ingredients, personalized service, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Samantha’s connection to the community remains at the heart of everything she does. In addition to running the restaurant, she prepares meals for the Elders Nutrition Program through the Valdez Native Tribe several times a month and continues to build partnerships with local suppliers and organizations. Looking ahead, she plans to expand her team and add new menu items.
“Ruth Wolfe with the Alaska SBDC was very helpful throughout my business planning process. She helped me refine my business plan, develop financial projections, and connect with resources. With her support, I received funding from a business plan competition grant and plan to apply for more.” — Samantha Geffe, Owner of Sam’s Spot
