Passing the torch: From hidden gem to must-visit destination
Nestled along the cliffs of Resurrection Bay, Granite Point is more than just a getaway—it’s a curated experience in seclusion, comfort, and Alaskan adventure. Owners Trent Lafleur and Kaelyn Schreiner took ownership of the property with a shared vision: to enhance a place already rich in natural beauty and transform it into a top-tier destination for outdoor lovers, families, and explorers alike.
When Trent and Kaelyn first discovered Granite Point in 2024, it was a business full of untapped potential. Despite its incredible location and well-built cabins, the property had not yet fully realized its marketing potential and visibility. Even more critically, they faced the daunting task of financing the purchase of the remote property itself—an ambitious undertaking that involved planning and financial insight.
The Alaska Small Business Development Center became a crucial partner from the very beginning. Not only did the Alaska SBDC support them through the financial process of securing funding for the property purchase, but it also provided ongoing assistance in marketing, operations, and strategic growth. With Business Advisor KellyAnn Cavaretta’s help, Trent and Kaelyn gained the confidence, structure, and tools they needed to not only acquire Granite Point but also to build it into a thriving, guest-focused business.
Reflecting on their journey, Kaelyn said, “Alaska SBDC helped to put us on the map. We took in a business that hadn’t previously been marketed, and gained the skills to bring in more interest and share our special place with more guests. KellyAnn provided us with ideas, connections, and infrastructure to succeed in our first year as owners!”
Over the past year, Granite Point has undergone a thoughtful transformation. With five cabins—four perched dramatically on a cliffside—guests are treated to stunning views of Resurrection Bay and its diverse wildlife. The property now boasts private beach access perfect for tide pooling and bonfires, as well as a trail that leads into the alpine. Looking ahead, Granite Point is excited to offer full property buyouts for weddings, retreats, and family reunions—welcoming their adventurous guests into a space that feels both wild and wonderfully welcoming.
Granite Point is a testament to the power of vision, hard work, and the right support. With help from the Alaska SBDC, Trent and Kaelyn turned their dream into the reality of a unique, sought-after destination in the heart of coastal Alaska. Whether it’s paddling through Resurrection Bay, hiking into the alpine, or simply watching the wildlife from a cabin window, Granite Point offers an unforgettable experience for every guest.
