- August 19, 2020: Please join the University of Alaska Fairbanks Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) Program and the Technology Research and Development Center of Alaska (TREND) Team at the Alaska Small Business Development Center (Alaska SBDC) in congratulating Stephen Grabacki, the President of GRAYSTAR Pacific Seafood, Ltd, in receiving a $100,000 Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the United States Department of Agriculture, National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA). Of only seven approved applications this year, GRAYSTAR has secured a coveted opportunity for Alaska.
USDA grants are nationally competitive and NIFA programs are specialized to provide investment opportunities to those furthering education and agricultural research. The goal of GRAYSTAR’s Phase 1 project is to develop a business to produce and sell Deep Ocean Water (DOW) as a nutraceutical beverage, in one or more coastal Alaska communities. DOW is seawater obtained at ocean depths of 250-1,500 meters. It has a low temperature, high purity, and high concentrations of beneficial mineral nutrients.
Phase 1 work will be performed at Hawaii Ocean Science & Technology Park. Phase 2 work will involve a pilot-scale in Alaska to be evaluated and selected during Phase 1, followed by eventual bulk-sale production. Especially important in the face of a global pandemic and recession, this SBIR Phase 1 grant will increase opportunities for employment and income generation in rural Alaskan coastal communities.
