Congratulations to the Winners of the TREND Phase 0 Grant Program!

January 16, 2025

The TREND Phase 0 Program, designed to bolster early-stage Alaskan innovators and forward-thinking companies with promising technologies, has awarded grants of up to $10,000 to qualified recipients. These awards support recipients as they advance their research and gain a competitive edge within their respective industries.

“Congratulations to the visionary Phase 0 grant recipients for their groundbreaking work and dedication,” said Jon Bittner, State Director of the Alaska SBDC. “Their achievements underscore the spirit of innovation in Alaska, and we are proud to support them as they achieve new milestones.”

The TREND Phase 0 grants will enable recipients to develop their projects further and work toward securing Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer Phase I or II awards from federal agencies.

Please join us in congratulating the following recipients for their remarkable achievements:

Ostrea Marine aims to advance a novel environmental DNA (eDNA) underwater long-term in-situ sampling system to improve our understanding of species and habitats critical for commercial fishing, aquaculture, and mariculture.

AirVitalize focuses on capturing particulate matter air pollution using electrostatic precipitator hardware technologies. The team is currently working to create electrostatic precipitators adjustable to strategically target airborne particulate matter most prevalent in desired geographical regions.

Bialume is building and testing a functional prototype that combines bioimpedance analysis with image spectrometry to measure fluid-based biomarkers in real-time, such as intra- and extracellular water, with data stored on a cloud platform for clinical and at-home use.

EagleSong Family Peony Farm is working to position botanical peony extract as a nationally recognized extract/flavoring sought after by the food and beverage industry. The team is also promoting the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and industrial benefits (anti-corrosion) of various peony plant extracts.

Stam Sustainable is focused on creating a sustainable, ethical poultry facility that can thrive in Alaska’s harsh climate while innovating resilient agricultural solutions by using Alaska’s geologic resources.

Alaska SBDC’s Phase 0 program is meant to support the pursuit of SBIR/STTR Phase I and II grants from federal agencies. Although not a requirement of the grants, Phase 0 recipients enjoy a remarkable 30% success rate on SBIR/STTR Phase I and II proposals, outpacing the national average of 15%.
