The 2020 TREND SBIR Phase 0 pool of applications was stronger and more competitive than ever. Even though the applications’ submission deadline was disrupted by the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic, due to the strength of the applicant pool TREND increased the number of grant winners from the original three to four! One of this year’s awardees is targeting the SBIR Phase 2 award and for another one this is their second Phase 0 award that, hopefully, will result in the second Phase 1 award as well.
Barati Medical, LLC is a biotechnology company founded by Bahareh Barati, a Research Scientist at the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The company is funded by seed grants from Alaska SBDC, Alaska Center ICE, and a Phase I SBIR award from the National Institutes of Health to develop a scaled-down optical imaging instrument that will enable a novel way to monitor brain function and diseases in freely moving laboratory animals.
Second Place: Deeptree, Inc.
Founded in 2013, Deeptree is an innovative digital risk management firm based in Alaska. With over 75 years in combined security, software development, and IT experience – Deeptree has a genuine desire to make the world a more secure place. Possessing experience ranging from working with US Digital Services to remote rural organizations throughout the United States and Alaska. With the use of machine learning their solution aims to provide real-time cybersecurity detection and response support, against opposing forces ever-changing capabilities, in a single pane of glass format.
Third Place: BeadedStream LLC
BeadedStream is innovating wherever the built environment meets the natural world. The company’s focus is developing technology for land and sea sensing applications that reach beyond the edge of other networks. BeadedStream’s next challenge is to develop technology for a reliable early-warning permafrost sensor that can be produced at a commercial scale. This technology is aligned with NIST’s mission to help solve the measurement and validation challenges of the fast-moving fields of IoT and future artificial intelligence/machine learning-based systems.
Fourth Place: GRAYSTAR Pacific Seafood, Ltd.
GRAYSTAR Pacific Seafood Ltd, launched in 1985 by Stephen Grabacki, a Certified Fisheries Professional. The firm provides technical support in all aspects in all aspects of fisheries, “from boat to throat” – biology, ecology, management, harvesting, processing, and quality assurance. Steve holds a Master of Science degree in fisheries biology from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. GRAYSTAR’s mission is the responsible development of fisheries and all other natural resources.
