Technology, AI & Cybersecurity in Alaska

Building Smarter, Safer, and More Competitive Businesses

Technology is no longer something “nice to have” for small businesses, it’s how businesses operate, compete, and grow. And it’s evolving faster than ever.

From AI-powered tools to cybersecurity protections, Alaska businesses are navigating a rapidly changing landscape. Whether you’re running a retail shop, managing a construction company, operating in tourism, or building a tech startup, knowing how to use technology effectively is becoming essential.

This month, we’re focusing on technology adoption, cybersecurity, and emerging tools like artificial intelligence, and how Alaska businesses can use them to work smarter, stay secure, and grow stronger.

AI in Action: Built for Alaska Businesses

Artificial intelligence isn’t just a buzzword anymore. It’s being used by small businesses across Alaska to save time, improve decision-making, and streamline daily operations, often in ways business owners didn’t expect even a year ago.

At the Alaska SBDC, this work is happening through our AI Resource Program. Carlos Machuca recently introduced a new tool, AI Search Advisor – Alaska SBDC, designed to help small businesses understand whether their websites are showing up in AI-powered search, and what to do if they’re not.

The tool is now available on the ChatGPT GPT Marketplace, giving businesses a simple way to explore how AI search may be impacting their visibility.

Through the AI Resource Program, business owners can explore practical ways to use AI to strengthen operations, marketing, and overall business strategy, without needing to be a tech expert.

Momentum from the Alaska SBDC AI & Innovation Summit

Last month’s Alaska SBDC Innovation Summit made one thing clear: technology, and especially AI, is moving fast.

Business owners, partners, and leaders from across Alaska came together to:

  • Explore real-world applications of AI
  • Learn about emerging tools and technologies
  • Talk through workforce challenges and opportunities
  • Build connections that will continue long after the event

The takeaway? Alaska businesses are ready to adopt new technology, they just need the right support, guidance, and resources to do it well.

Cybersecurity: Protecting What You’re Building

As businesses adopt more technology, cybersecurity becomes just as important as growth strategy.

Small businesses are increasingly targets for cyber threats, and even one incident can disrupt operations, impact customer trust, and create financial setbacks.

The good news? A few simple steps can make a big difference:

  • Turn on multi-factor authentication
  • Keep software and systems updated
  • Train employees to recognize phishing attempts
  • Back up critical business data

Cybersecurity isn’t just an IT issue, it’s about protecting everything you’ve worked hard to build.

Workforce & Technology Go Hand-in-Hand

Adopting new technology isn’t just about tools, it’s about people.

Across Alaska, businesses are balancing the need for new systems with the need to train and support their teams. Whether it’s learning how to use AI tools, improving digital skills, or adapting to new systems, workforce training is a key part of making technology work.

Because technology only works when people feel confident using it.

How Alaska SBDC Can Help

You don’t have to figure this out on your own.
