The Gift Shop

Vintage Finds & Modern Vibes in Valdez

The Gift Shop officially opened its doors on July 1st, 2024, and has been a bright ray of sunshine in Valdez, Alaska ever since. Owned and operated by Celeste Addison and Elaine Montero Vargas, the shop is the first Black-owned storefront in Valdez, adding a special touch to its legacy.

Inspired by a love for fashion and art, Celeste and Elaine transformed the existing business into a thriving hub for locals and tourists. “The initial response from customers has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the unique selection of items and the shop’s welcoming atmosphere.” Says Elaine.

Its dedication to sustainability and community engagement sets The Gift Shop apart. The shop offers a curated selection of locally made art, jewelry, accessories, and new and gently used clothing. Nestled at 131 Fairbanks Drive, in the heart of downtown Valdez, the shop benefits from a prime location that ensures a steady flow of customers, from local residents to tourists arriving by cruise ships.

The Gift Shop also stands out for its innovative approach to retail. The shop plans to sublease space for workshops and classes, creating a vibrant community space. It is expanding its online sales channels to maintain revenue during the quieter winter months.

Marketing efforts focus on building brand awareness through social media, email marketing, and traditional advertising. Their Instagram and Facebook pages showcase their unique products and engage with the local community, providing updates on new arrivals and upcoming events.

The future looks bright for The Gift Shop, much like the vibrant colors that fill its space. Celeste and Elaine are excited about potential partnerships with food trucks and hosting events in or around the shop.

The Alaska SBDC’s Rural Business Advisor, Ruth Wolfe, played a significant role in The Gift Shop’s journey to success. The SBDC assisted in several key areas, including business advising, business structure, licensing assistance, completing financial projections, and business plan development. Celeste remarked, “The work I did with my Alaska SBDC Business Advisor, Ruth Wolfe, in creating and reviewing financial projections and a business plan was essential for getting the funding I needed to start our business. Ruth’s expertise in financial planning helped me understand my financial needs and potential profitability, which was key in making a strong case to lenders.”
