A Community Gathering Place in Sand Point
Nestled in Sand Point’s boat harbor, Small Craft Cafe is a family-owned and operated restaurant serving fresh, made-to-order meals to locals, seasonal fishermen, and visitors. Known for its burgers, sandwiches, and handcrafted drinks, the cafe has quickly become a favorite gathering place, offering warm hospitality and a welcoming atmosphere.
For owner Heather Thompson, owning a restaurant has been a lifelong dream. Growing up in Sand Point, she cherished the rare moments of dining out with family, but opening a restaurant of her own always seemed like an impossible goal. That changed in 2023 when the opportunity arose to purchase the beloved Harbor Cafe. Seeing a chance to continue a well-loved establishment while creating something new, Heather and her family embraced the challenge.
Taking over an existing restaurant required significant updates. The dining area and kitchen needed renovations, essential equipment upgrades were necessary, and financial support was crucial to making it all happen while keeping meals affordable for the community. Seeking guidance, Heather connected with the Alaska Small Business Development Center (SBDC). With the help of business advisor Ruth Wolfe, she successfully applied for the Alaska Growth Capital Grant and received assistance with financial projections and business planning.
Plans are in motion to enhance the dining experience with new flooring and kitchen equipment, ensuring a safer and more efficient workspace. The cafe is also expanding its role in the community, hosting family-friendly events like Back to School Ice Cream Night and partnering with two local Tribal Organizations to provide meals for elders.
“The Alaska SBDC has been an incredible resource for us,” says Heather. “Thanks to their guidance, we’re making improvements that will serve our customers and employees for years to come.”
More than just a restaurant, Small Craft Cafe is a cornerstone of the Sand Point community. With a dedication to quality food, meaningful connections, and ongoing growth, Heather and her team are ensuring that their family’s vision thrives for years to come.
