From Engineer to EMDR & Family Counselor,
Anchorage Hit the Jack-Pot Again
Julie Shewman was always an entrepreneur at heart and now in reality too! Following a successful civil engineering career, Julie decided to make a change. While raising a family of three busy adolescents, she went back to school in 2012 to set her dream in motion. After graduation, she worked to earn her license as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) (a.k.a. therapist, life coach, and counselor).
Wanting to establish a private counseling practice, and as an LPC with no prior business ownership experience, Julie began working with the Alaska Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Ketchikan on the recommendation of a friend. With the help of Kimberlee Hayward, her Business Advisor, Julie worked through routine and professional licensing start-up tasks and bookkeeping, Once those tasks were behind her, the focus became marketing and creating a website which reflected Julie’s warm style and caring nature.
If Julie thought starting a business was out of her comfort zone, building a beautiful and welcoming website for Julie Shewman LPC Counseling Services, certainly was too, but with Kimberlee’s knowledge and encouragement, she successfully did just that.
“The resources and advising available from the SBDC have allowed me to get my business established so I can do the work I love.”
Julie Shewman’s private practice has officially been in business providing counseling services and steadily growing for a year. Julie works with adolescents and adults addressing trauma, attachment, depression, anxiety, and stress-related issues. She uses many modalities in her work and is trained in EMDR.
