New Business Keeping Alaska Happy and Healthy
As a lifelong Alaskan from Adak, Dr. Sharon Lemmons knew she wanted to leverage her love of science into a career that would help others. Taking her calling to heart, she graduated from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1998 and returned to Alaska for her residency. In 2001 Dr. Lemmons become Board Certified to practice Family Medicine in Alaska, and she has been doing so ever since.
In 2013, Dr. Lemmons decided to grow into her own practice. She wanted to open an office where her patients felt comfortable with their Doctor and where she would have the time to sit with them and answer their questions fully. She began working on a business plan and brought it to the Alaska Small Business Development Center to hash out the narrative and financial projections. As opening day grew near, Dr. Lemmons started working with SBDC Business Advisors on her marketing plan and website. They worked on ways to increase awareness for the new practice including a direct mailing, radio spots and a series ticket giveaways for the latest Star Wars movie.
“The SBDC has been integral in getting Lemon Tree Family Medicine, LLC up and running.,” said Dr. Lemmons. “They have been involved through the whole process from my business plan to my website and marketing plan. Having a strong business plan gave me the confidence to clearly defend my business ideas and obtain the funding I needed. I could not have done it without their support and encouragement.”
