Blaine’s Art: A Canvas of Dreams and Expertise, Fueled by SBDC Guidance

In the heart of Anchorage, a beacon of creativity and community thrives at Blaine’s Art, a local art supply store and frame shop that’s been fueling Alaskan artists since 1953. At the helm of this vibrant business is Amanda Bennett, an artist herself, whose journey from a cashier to the owner is a testament to her passion and dedication.

As Amanda completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting, she joined Blaine’s Art, not just as an employee but as part of a community where art, spirit, and togetherness blend seamlessly. Her love for the place where she once rang up paints and brushes evolved into a dream to steer its legacy. Blaine’s Art isn’t just a store; it’s a sanctuary where artists of all skills and ages find their tools and inspiration.

What sets Blaine’s Art apart? “We sell the good stuff, the good, good stuff,” says Amanda with pride. The store boasts an unparalleled range of professional art supplies, catering to every skill level. Their frame shop, managed by the meticulous and talented local artist Cade Bennett, is renowned for its craftsmanship and quality.

Blaine’s Art is more than a store; it’s a hub for artistic exchange and growth. Last year, Amanda initiated a series of Group Art Shows open to artists of all ages and skills. The themes, based on mediums like watercolor and acrylic, turned the store into a vibrant gallery, fostering a community spirit. This year, the plan is to expand these events, further solidifying Blaine’s Art as a central “third place” for Anchorage’s art lovers.

Reflecting on the growth and evolution of Blaine’s Art, Amanda credits the Alaska Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for its pivotal role. “So much value! My SBDC Advisor was instrumental,” she shares. The guidance in business planning, financial analysis, and positive thinking were crucial. Amanda particularly appreciated the safe space to ask “dumb questions,” which, in reality, were stepping stones to her business success.

Blaine’s Art, under Amanda Bennett’s leadership, continues to be a cornerstone for Anchorage’s artistic community. Supported by the SBDC’s expertise and resources, Amanda and her team are steering Blaine’s Art into a future where art is accessible, celebrated, and integral to the community spirit.
