Brenda Cruickshank, owner of The Salon in Anchorage, came to the Alaska Small Business Development Center with a unique business model which entailed a business inside of a business. With 40 years of experience in hair-cutting and styling, Cruickshank had a dream of owning her own salon where she could not only continue serving her clients but also lease the remaining chairs to other stylists with their own clientele. Anchorage Director Lynn Klassert assisted Cruickshank in completing the financial projections for her dream to make sure it was feasible long term along with a business plan narrative that would guide her decisions, especially during those first few crucial months.
“When I first contacted the SBDC I was already involved in my salon project,” said Cruickshank. “My advisor, Lynn Klassert, helped me tremendously to get my business plan in place. Once I had a business plan I had an amazing sense of relief.”
Cruickshank officially opened the doors of The Salon in November of 2014 with a line up of stylists with over 150 years of combined experience. When you walk into the Salon you are greeted with a fun, comfortable atmosphere and you leave happy with the high-quality services you received.
