Ruth and Jeff Adolf began working with the Small Business Development Center in June of 2014. They were looking to purchase an existing automotive shop in Wasilla and wanted to make sure that it was a good investment. The business, Knik Tire & Auto, had been closed for about a year and half and also came with rental property and existing tenants. Although it would be a lot to take on, Jeff had more than 20 years of mechanic experience and Ruth was willing to embark on a new adventure and get the business up and running smoothly.
Apart from the financial aspect of purchasing a business, the Adolf’s wanted guidance on how to reopen the auto shop with the greatest chance of success. Mat-Su Valley business advisor, Julie Nolen, worked with the Adolfs on marketing, accounting, merchant services, and day to day best practices that would help the business run smoothly and reopen with a bang. Additionally, Julie assisted them in navigating new territory as landlords.
“Working with the SBDC in Wasilla has been an enjoyable and invaluable learning experience. Julie Nolen has been a tremendous support and assisted us with so many things that we were very unfamiliar with as new business owners (how to advertise, how to register the business, how to obtain business license, how to work with QuickBooks, and the list goes on!). We can’t be thankful enough,” said Ruth, “Running your own business certainly requires a wide range of skills. Ms. Nolen goes the extra mile, she constantly “checks in” and makes herself available for questions. We are very fortunate to have this type of quality, commitment, and knowledge available to our local business community”.
Knik Tire and Auto is now up and running, open Monday through Saturday from 8am to 6pm. Make sure to visit them at 1800 S Knik Good Bat Rd in Wasilla, Alaska and like them on Facebook.
