Humdinger’s Gourmet Pizza Co, owned by Gordon Fletcher, is a locally owned, family run gourmet pizza destination in Palmer, Alaska. Fairly new to the scene, Humdinger’s reached it’s one year anniversary in August 2013 and is already known for offering well-made wood fired pizzas with unique toppings customers cannot find anywhere else. For example, the “One Mean Jamaican” signature pizza features sweet jerk chutney, mozzarella, chicken, red onion and pineapple topped with coconut. Not your style? Humdinger’s menu has a wide range of selections and also offers a “Build Your Own Humdinger” option for those with specific tastes.
Fletcher worked with the Alaska Small Business Development Center in Wasilla initially as he was preparing to open the business and then once it was opened in order to make sure he was keeping the business on the right track in its first crucial year. Fletcher also attended Profit Mastery which he found to be invaluable in understanding the nuts and bolts of business.
“It helps when, just starting out, to have a quick snap shot of the health of the business” said Fletcher.
Fletcher also worked with Julie Nolen to make sure that they were working inside the food regulations for restaurants as he was preparing the menu and purchasing the tools he would use to make the pizza.
Once Humdinger’s launched it saw immediate success and was able to create several jobs in Palmer. Fletcher used the tools he learned in the Profit Mastery course and while working with Nolen to navigate his financials and monitor the cash flow in order to pay off the initial costs of establishing the business in a smart and expedient manner.
