Aims Alf first began working with the Alaska Small Business Development Center in Juneau in November of 2014 as she began the process with her partner Alex Alf to purchase the Southeast Waffle Company in Auke Bay. After spending years of developing their own unique approach to cuisine from their extensive culinary backgrounds, the two decided it was time to unleash a style absolutely new to Juneau and with the assistance from the Juneau AKSBDC, they were provided the resources to help them do so.
During their first few meetings, Aims and her business advisor, Ian Grant, used the ProfitCents tool to analyze the fiscal aspects of the purchase. Ian was also able to apply his experience in the restaurant industry as Aims & Alex worked on remodeling the existing restaurant and it’s menu to fit the GonZo overall motto of “out with the old, in with the weird!”.
Taking over an existing business can sometimes make it difficult to add a personal touch without isolating your existing customers. Aims & Alex overcame that obstacle with GonZo by refining the existing menu with creative and innovative products including homemade pastries and hand pies. Soon after opening, Aims entered GonZo into Juneau’s 2015 Bacon Fest Competition and won first place in the Professional Category and placed second for the Sweet Category.
“SBDC helps me out immensely by showing me the tools to success and giving me the structural support of constructing my business as how I want it to be,” said Aims, “Ian Grant’s communication and persistent planning help motivate proactive progression”
In it’s second year of operations Gonzo has continued to grow with lines of customers often reaching out the door! Frequent menu updates and an expanding signature waffle recipe offering has grabbed the attention of many local Juneauites who are now making Gonzo their weekend breakfast hot spot. Whether it’s the new premium loose leaf teas, an organic locally roasted espresso or the expanded drink menu, Gonzo proves they have something incredible to offer every customer.
In addition to all that’s incredible coming from the kitchen Gonzo also continues to upgrade their space with the rotation of works from local artists and a growingly popular merchandise section.
If you haven’t visited Aims and Alex’s Gonzo yet, there is no better time to become the Gonzo patron and experience being “in it.” Learn more about GonZo by visiting their Facebook page, or in person at 11806 Glacier Highway in Juneau, Alaska.
