Frontier Family Medicine is a family-owned and operated practice that may sound familiar to many residents in the Mat-Su valley. The practice, located on the Palmer-Wasilla Highway, primarily serves Alaskans who are either uninsured or have a high deductible insurance and cannot afford basic healthcare. Sandy Spencer, owner of Frontier Family Medicine, understood that there was a need for such a practice and was passionate about bringing healthcare services to her community for those who needed it so she came to the Alaska Small Business Development Center in Wasilla in 2011 to make her vision a reality.
Spencer started working with Julie Nolen on her business plan and to discuss funding options. Spencer and Nolen worked together for four months on the plan and Spencer was able to use it to secure funding for the start-up costs.
After the launch, Spencer and Nolen continued to meet. They discussed the marketing strategy for the practice in order to increase community awareness for the new business, creating an employee handbook and networking opportunities. Spencer continues to meet with Nolen from time to time as her business grows and she discovers new challenges.
