The Flying Whale Coffee Shop at the Homer Airport
It’s been just over one year since Dan Lush began work on Flying Whale Coffee in the Homer Airport, where those waiting for their flights can grab a cup of high-quality java and pick up some last minute souvenirs for their friends and family. Lush worked with Alaska SBDC Assistant State Director Bryan Zak to put together his business plan and organize his financial projections for the business startup. Once he had prepared his packet, he was able to lease the space from the City of Homer.
“The Alaska SBDC is an important resource for a small business for two reasons,” said Lush. “It is easy to use with very friendly persons to help guide the new business person. Also, there are business standards to compare your ideas to therefore adding the professional and experienced quality to your business.”
Having previously owned small businesses, Lush says that his favorite part of the new venture is being able to hire people from the community and even from his own family to help him run the shop. He has enjoyed getting to know the artists that supply his gift shop and seeing how talented they are.
What is truly amazing that even though just after ordering the state of the art coffee cart, Dan was diagnosed with throat cancer and had to undergo treatment. The City of Homer was able to work with Dan so that his lease did not start until he had regained his energy. Dan never lost site of his passion and desire to open the Flying Whale Coffee Shop. As soon as Dan was cleared by the doctors he was back running full speed ahead with his grand opening.
If you find yourself in the Homer Airport, don’t forget to check out the Flying Whale before your flight! They open one hour before the first plane and until the last plane is on the ground.” You can also check them out on their Facebook page.
