This Metlakatla Artist is Carving out
an Innovative Business

Kyle Hudson learned how to carve from his uncle, a master carver and art teacher, Jack Hudson, when he was a young man growing up in the Laxsgiik Eagle Clan of the Tsimshian community in Metlakatla, Alaska.  After working as a Navy Contractor, he returned to his home in Metlakatla and as his passion for culture and the carving artistry was reignited, as was his desire to create an accompanying business.

Combining creative talents, attention to detail, and his world travels with his business start-up, Kyle worked with the Small Business Development Center and his advisor, Kimberlee Hayward in Ketchikan to build Equinox Designs.

Master Carver, Dave Boxley Jr., helped Kyle understand the fundamentals of Tsimshian Formline and the philosophy behind this method and his ancestry, in turn, elevating his artistry. From Kyle’s  pieces, you will find his work not only honors tradition but also tells stories by combining a dramatic flare with bold color and a nod to the elements.  With this background and determination, Kyle’s hard work has led him to create and run a business based solely on his carving talents and unique style.
