Arkose Brewery is nestled at the foothills of the Chugach and Talkeetna Mountain ranges in Palmer, Alaska. Founded in 20ll by husband and wife team Stephen and June Gerteisen, the brewery was named after Arkose Ridge and Arkose Peak which serve as a beautiful backdrop to the brewery’s storefront.
The Gerteisens began to make their dream of opening a small craft brewery a reality in 2007 after Stephen completed the Master Brewers Program at U.C. Davis. He then contacted the Alaska Small Business Development Center in Anchorage for assistance on the business plan.
“Tom Flanagan of the SBDC provided invaluable feedback, suggestions, and advice on writing an effective business plan that we continue to profit from today as we grow and expand on that original business plan” said Stephen.
Stephen’s background in biology combined with his formal brewing education and hands-on experience set the stage for success. June came equipped with years of experience in marketing communications as a designer and has also completed the nationally accredited Beer Judging Certification program (BJCP). Together they built their brewery from the ground up – with Stephen managing all aspects of the brewing process and quality control, and June working as the Creative Director in establishing their brand and offering unique events such as “Beer Meets Canvas” and “Beer Meets Chocolate”. Together they created the line-up of flagship and seasonal beers that are distributed statewide.
To add to their skills and qualifications to start a brewery, Stephen attended several SBDC workshops on topics such as the legal implications to creating an LLC and a hands-on Quickbooks class.
After three years of running the brewery as a husband and wife team they are expanding. Arkose Brewery has hired their first employees and both Stephen and June plan on attending more webinars and workshops at the SBDC to help them manage and grow their brewery in the most efficient way possible.
